6、The other day at the supermarket, I saw a naughty child of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed. A little smack(打)on his bottom would have done the job, I thought.
Teenagers also cause discipline(紀(jì)律)problems . As a teacher I had a 16-year-old student who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact , she had left home to stay with him .So we decided to put her in the school hostel(學(xué) 生 宿 舍). She refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel she turned round and said: “Why don’t you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”
My palms were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not. The last I heard, she had run away from home again.
The list goes on and on. Could it be that today's parents are softer and believe that they must not rod(棍棒懲罰) their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older? I beg to disagree. I believe it is the parents’ duty to discipline the children even at a young age.
My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it necessary. Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how they were disciplined. Their friends abroad were filled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged for child abuse(虐待). However, my daughter showed great respect for me when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.

4.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A.Respect Parents B.Spoil Kids C.Value Discipline D.Protect Kids

5、I went online to check my pay was in my bank account(帳戶). To my amazement I discovered that not only had I been paid, a company I’d never worked for had also paid me! I know I ’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account , so I tried to get the money back to the right person . Easier said than done.
The bank couldn’t help as it “wasn’t a bank problem.” The human-resource department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details. I rang the bank again. Thankfully I had a sympathetic call operator who gave me a name, so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for.
I expected the bank would contact me to arrange to take the money from my account and repay Daniel. I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourselves.
We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me . Due to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his. I never had any intention of keeping Daniel’s pay but red tape(繁瑣手續(xù)) made it difficult to do the right thing . It all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company could not do — admit a mistake has occurred and fix it.
1.What was the attitude of the author towards the extra money in his bank account?
A.He didn’t know what to do with it. B.He felt lucky to get it.
C.He thought of keeping it for himself. D.He wanted to return it to the right person.
2.The underlined phrase “beside myself ” in Paragraph 1) probably means_________.
A.very fortunate B.very angry D.really thankful D.a(chǎn)t ease
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Daniel had been repaid when he called the author.
B.The author was to blame as he didn't have enough details.
C.Neither the bank nor the company admitted their fault.
D.Daniel had the same name as the author’s.
4.How was the problem solved in the end?
A.The author and Daniel solved the problem themselves.
B.It cost Daniel a lovely bottle of wine to get back his money.
C.The author gave the money back to the company.
D.The call operator offered to solve their problem.
5.From the passage we can infer that__________.
A.the bank could solve the problem soon and easily with the red tape
B.some large organizations usually have troublesome official rules
C.Daniel didn't know the error before he contacted the author
D.the company gave the wrong account to the bank

4、One blue sky above us,
One ocean lapping at our shore,
One earth so great and round,
Who could ask for anything more?
Pete Seeger
In fact, nobody has the right to ask for anything more. If we humans fail to keep a balance between our needs and the needs of the natural world, our great round Earth will no longer be fit to live on.
There are many reasons for keeping this balance.
For one ,if we continue to over-fish the seas , certain species will disappear .The kinds of fish that we humans catch feed on smaller ones , and if all these killers disappear, the smaller fish will overwhelm (泛濫) the sea. Edible (可食的) fish — as well as many fishermen’s livelihoods — will disappear.
And if we continue to clear land, cutting down trees, the animals, which use trees as a food source and for shelter, will suffer from a disturbance. Many of them will eventually die out.
Since we love the beauty and grace of deer and moose running in our woods, protection against over-hunting is also a must. If hunters break our laws and kill animals when it is not time, then these species won’t be there any more — for beauty or hunting.
Finally, if man keeps polluting and littering, the waters —fresh and salt—nonbiode- gradable substances (非降解物質(zhì)) will build up and make the water unfit to support underwater lives. Again, many people who make their living from the sea will no longer be able to.
We need this balance to keep the beauty of our world for ourselves and for our children and grandchildren. For if that beauty disappears, everything man can hope to achieve will be lost forever.

2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Over-fishing. B.Over-hunting.

B.The smaller fish will flood the sea because of ocean pollution.
C.The deer will no longer be beautiful as a result of disappearance of trees.
D.Both underwater lives and humans will be in danger unless the waters are kept clean.
4.The passage mainly tells us that__________.
A.the necessity of fighting against littering

D.the importance of keeping the balance of nature
