I work as a postal letter carrier in Charlotte. One day several years ago, I drove up to a   1 . Christy, the young divorcee (離了婚的人) who lived there, was waiting by the roadside. She said that she had a   2  to tell me.
About six months  3  it seemed that I had   4  a letter to her which had her street   5  on it but was addressed to another house with the   6  number on a different street in the neighborhood. She decided to   7  the letter at the correct house.
It turned out that the letter had been   8  for Johnson, who happened to be   9 . They talked for a little while, and later on he   10 . Then they started dating and had been going   11  together ever since.
I felt sorry for delivering the letter wrong, but I was   12  that I had brought these nice people together.
A few months later a(n)   13  sign went up in Christy’s yard, and then wedding   14  were sent out. Soon the house was sold, the wedding happened,   15  Christy, with her kids, moved into Johnson’s house.
A few months later, I saw a For Sale sign in   16  yard. I feared the   17  might be in trouble, so I made up a(n)   18  to go to their door and   19  on them.
Christy opened the door, smiled broadly, and pointed to her huge stomach “We’re having twins!” she said, “This house won’t be big enough, so we have to   20 .”

One day several years ago是七年前的事情,由此可知,這個(gè)女士告訴我的應(yīng)該是在此之前的六個(gè)月,所以應(yīng)為更早之前。

put down 鎮(zhèn)壓,記下;drop off 放下,放棄;hand out    分發(fā),施舍;give away 泄露。

When responding to any adult, you must answer by saying “Yes ma’am” or “No, sir.” Just nodding your head is not acceptable.
Because I grew up in rural North Carolina, this rule comes    36   to me, and it seems the obvious choice to come first. If you want children to respect you, you have to let them know    37 . Simply telling them you want them to address you by saying “sir” lets them know   38     you expect them to treat you. I also tell my students it’s a very useful tool when    39  with adults, and furthermore it also     40   handy for any adult interacting with another adult. Case in point: I was   41    the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies(差錯(cuò)) of my    42  . The lady I spoke to was not 43   and seemed annoyed.    44  , in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes, ma’am,” and her entire  45  changed. She became far more helpful and   46  to deal with, and she   47  cutting my bill in half.
Some of my students in Harlem were to be   48  for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were   49  the many kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be   50  with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “  51  you say ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been   52  . When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main   53  he made over and over was how   54   my students were in their interviews. It seemed like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets   55  .

It’s a sad and familiar sentence from a beggar that we often hear. Usually, when asked “Can you spare some   36  ?” I’ve been struck with a feeling of   37  if I passed by without giving a coin or two.

your eyes, Man," the Cat said. The Man gave him a questioning look, but did as he was told.
"What color are my eyes and fur?" the Cat asked. " Your eyes are gold and your fur is a rich, warm brown," the Man replied.
"And where is it that you most often   40  me?" asked the Cat. “I see you. . . on the kitchen window

42 at night. " "Then, whenever you wish to see me, all you must do is close your eyes," said the Cat.
“Pick up that piece of string from the floor——there, my ‘toy’ .” he Man opened his eyes, then  43 over and picked up the string. It was about two feet long and the Cat had been able to   44  himself
for hours with it. '"Now take each end of the string in one hand," the Cat ordered. The Man did so.
"The end in your left hand is my birth and the end in your right hand is my   45 . Now bring the two ends together," the Cat said. The Man obeyed.
"You have made a continuous  46  ," said the cat. "Does any point along the string appear to be different, worse or better than any other part of the string?" The Man inspected the string and then   47  his head " no".
The Man shut his eyes hard as the tears poured down his face. He saw the Cat on the  48  , then in his bed, then lying across his important papers. He saw him on the pillow next to his head, saw his bright gold eyes and darkest brown on his nose and ears. He opened his eyes and  49 his tears looked over at the circle of string he still held in his hand.
One day, not long after, there was a new Cat on his lap. She was lovely and white…very different from his earlier   50 Cat and very much the same.

When we read books we seem to enter a new world. This new world can be similar to the one we are living in, or it can be very      . Some stories are told       they were true. Real people who live in a       world do real things; in other words, the stories are about people just like us doing what we do. Other stories, such as the Harry Potter books, are not       . They are characters and creatures that are very different from us and do things that would be       for us.
But there is more to books and writing than this. If we think about it, even realistic writing is only     . How can we tell the difference between what is real and what is not real? For example, when we read about Harry Potter, we       seem to learn something about the real world. And when Harry studies magic at Hogwarts, he also learns more about his real life than      . Reading, like writing, is an action. It is a way of      . When we read or write something, we do much more than simple look at words on a page. We use our       -- which is real-- and our imagination-- which is real in a different way --- to make the words come to life in our minds. www.zxxk.com
Both realism and fantasy(幻想)       the imagination and the “magic” of reading and writing to make us think. When we read       realistic, we have to imagine that the people we are reading about are just like us, even though we       that we are real and they are    . It sounds       , but it works. When we read, we fill in missing information and     about the causes and effects of what a character does. We help the writer by   52  that what we read is like real life. In a way, we are writing the book, too.
Most of us probably don’t think about what is going on in our       when we are reading. We pick up a book and lose       in a good story, eager to find out what will happen next. Knowing how we feel       we read can help us become better readers, and it will help us discover more about the real magic of books.
