Where should an adventurous tourist go? After you've done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York, tasted the local food in Paris, and danced to your heart's content at the Brazilian Carnival, where else can you go? What exotic (異國(guó)風(fēng)情的) tourist destination awaits you?

Well, Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can cope with the low temperatures.

Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and it's still a small scale. About 37,000 tourists are expected there this season, but many won't even leave the boat.

The BBC's Juliet Rix visited the frozen continent and asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment. Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave footprints and they all go to the same place, the accessible coastline, which is also where the penguins and seals go to breed.

But some people believe that if carefully controlled, tourism can be good for Antarctica. It has no native population and it needs advocates. Visitors to the icy continent might be ready to support and even to fund its preservation. And they're likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers.

According to Rix, guidelines are followed when you're about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect (為……消毒) their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced.

And once on land, there's no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind. Tourists fortunate enough to visit Antarctica must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breathtaking views.

試題分析:

【1】推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段的第二句“It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth.”可知,它被認(rèn)為是地球上最后的不毛之地。由此可推知,南極洲受人類活動(dòng)的影響較小。

【2】推理判斷題。根據(jù)第四段的“asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment”以及“Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave footprints and they all go to the same place”可推知,人們是否應(yīng)該去南極洲旅游應(yīng)認(rèn)真地考慮一下。

【3】正誤判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段的“there's no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind”可知,A、B、C三項(xiàng)的說法均與原文不符;根據(jù)文章結(jié)尾處“to enjoy such breathtaking views”可知,游客可以在南極洲欣賞到美麗的景色。

【4】標(biāo)題歸納題。通讀全文的內(nèi)容可知,文章圍繞的是“應(yīng)該不應(yīng)該去南極洲旅游?”這一話題,因此C項(xiàng)最適合作標(biāo)題。

Robots performing tasks according to a predetermined set of instructions are nothing new.But robots able to learn how to cook by watching videos are a completely different approach, which is conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Maryland.

If you have posted a video of your favorite recipe on the popular website YouTube, chances are that it will be used by a robot.University of Maryland's professor Yiannis Aloimonos, leader of the group, said “There exists a large amount of video information on the Internet that our robots can capitalize_on.”

“At present, the videos are fed electronically,”said research scientist Cornelia Fermuller.“Originally, we took our own videos, our cameras looking at us doing the cooking,”she explained.“And, as the robot advances, it reacts to good quality videos. And it will react to even lower quality homemade videos.”

So far, the robot named Julia can make a simple salad by breaking each task into basic parts, such as grasping a spoon, bringing it to the bowl, stirring the salad and observing the results.

But why teach a robot how to understand a video when it can easily follow a fixed program?Aloimonos believes predetermined instructions lack flexibility. He thinks one of the problems is how to make the robot understand and use what it learns during a certain task, the socalled feedback (反饋意見); another is the introduction of language.

“I believe it will take quite some time before the robots are able to understand metaphorical (比喻性的) laguage,”he added.“But,” he said,“we don't need that to create a new world where the robots will be working for us.”

【1】The underlined phrase “capitalize on” in Paragraph 2 probably can be replaced by ________.

A.take hold of B.make use of

C.keep track of D.catch sight of

【2】Aloimonos probably agrees that at present the robot ________.

A.can not fully digest what it learns

B.can not make a simple salad

C.can follow homemade videos

D.can understand metaphorical language

【3】Robots are taught to understand a video mainly because ________.

A.they can easily follow fixed programs

B.they are smart enough to learn cooking

C.cooking videos are more interesting to watch

D.predetermined instructions are not flexible

【4】Which of the following might best serve as the title of the passage?

A.Robots Creating a New World

B.Robots Making Cooking Videos

C.Robots Learning to Cook by Watching Videos

D.Robots Performing Tasks by Following Instructions
