“Look, it’s Baldy!” A boy shouted in my direction across the playground. Even though I was
used to regular insults(侮辱)because of the 41 on my head, it was 42 horrible to hear. I sighed as I headed back to the class.
When I was just 20 months old, I suffered serious 43 after a bowl full of hot oil fell on my head. I was 44 to hospital and had to stay there for weeks while the doctors 45 to save my life. “Holly’s very 46 to be alive,” they told Mum and Dad. “But she’ll be 47 with scars on her head, and of course her hair won’t grow there.”
As a child, I cared much about my scars, so I 48 wore a scarf to cover them up when I left home. 49 I didn’t, people would call me horrible names like Baldy. Although my friends were always comforting me, they never 50 understood how it felt.
Then through the hospital I was 51 to a children’s burns camp, where children like me can get any help. There I 52 14-year-old Stephanie, whose burns are a lot more serious than mine. But she is so 53 that she never lets anyone put her down. “You shouldn’t 54 what people say about what you look like because we’re not different from anyone else, Holly, ” She 55 me. “And you don’t need to wear a scarf because you look great 56 it!” For the first time in my life I could speak to someone who’d been through something 57 . So weeks later, at my 13th birthday party, 58 by her bravery, I gave up my scarf and showed off my scars. It felt amazing not having to 59 away behind my scarf.
Now, I am 60 of what I look like and much happier, because I have realized it is your personality that decides who you are.

When responding to any adult, you must answer by saying “Yes ma’am” or “No, sir.” Just nodding your head is not acceptable.
Because I grew up in rural North Carolina, this rule comes 36 to me, and it seems the obvious choice to come first. If you want children to respect you, you have to let them know 37 . Simply telling them you want them to address you by saying “sir” lets them know 38 you expect them to treat you. I also tell my students it’s a very useful tool when 39 with adults, and furthermore it also 40 handy for any adult interacting with another adult. Case in point: I was 41 the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies(差錯(cuò)) of my 42 . The lady I spoke to was not 43 and seemed annoyed. 44 , in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes, ma’am,” and her entire 45 changed. She became far more helpful and 46 to deal with, and she 47 cutting my bill in half.
Some of my students in Harlem were to be 48 for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were 49 the many kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be 50 with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “ 51 you say ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been 52 . When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main 53 he made over and over was how 54 my students were in their interviews. It seemed like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets 55 .

It’s a sad and familiar sentence from a beggar that we often hear. Usually, when asked “Can you spare some 36 ?” I’ve been struck with a feeling of 37 if I passed by without giving a coin or two.
My conscience was hurt again when I was making a 38 in Venice in 2006. I was sitting in a quiet café. Outside the café on the street was an old woman on her knees, 39 . Steady streams of 40 were walking past her. A young backpacker stood away from the crowd drinking something, but I noticed he was also 41 the woman.
She knelt motionlessly, her head almost touching the ground, a worn blanket providing little protection 42 the cold. The sight was especially 43 when compared with the signs of the 44 city around her.
A tourist group hurried along the street, 45 at the woman and walked on. Another group of tourists arrived, 46 again, walked past her. The backpacker watched. Then, as I prepared to leave, I stopped at the sight of the backpacker 47 and placing some money in the woman’s cup. He did this rather 48 , just before the arrival of another tourist group. I watched 49 the leader of the group stopped and put some money in the cup. With the young man 50 the way, other tourists followed.

People always say that if God closed a door in front of you, there must be a window opened for you. Yes, people always say that, but 31 is the window for me?
I’m not disappointed, just a little worried 32 as my roommate said, “Why are you angry with yourself once you 33 to do anything?” I had no idea. I just can’t 34 myself if I can understand some easy things. Now, I just feel 35 with myself because I couldn’t finish the assignment(任務(wù)) on the lab, and what was 36 worse was that actually I didn’t understand what the 37 was! Fiona asked me why I didn’t 38 for help. The problem is that if I have to ask some silly questions, I will feel 39 .
Before I came here, I was confident. But I have totally 40 it. Sometimes I can’t even find the right words: sometimes I am too shy to 41 others. I have to admit that I am 42 .
The wisest people are always 43 who can take advantage of others’ wisdom. But I was so stupid as to close myself and 44 a lot of time soaking inside the workbook, 45 made me more confused. Why can’t I follow the sentence? I am 46 to get help the next time I have any questions. I can 47 I am not smart, But I shouldn’t hide it. I must 48 it as soon as possible. 49 I will have to waste much more time on it ---just like tonight.
Difficulties always go with me. Go 50 ! I can make it.
