根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從下框的A---F選項(xiàng)中選出能概括每一段主題的最佳選項(xiàng)。 選項(xiàng)中有一項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。
A. The absorbing nourishment
   (營(yíng)養(yǎng)) of cells
B. Each organ of body can work
   individually
C. The excreting (排泄) and cleaning
   of cells
D. The regeneration of cells
E. The cell living in a community
   of cells
F. The  cause of illnesses
1. (      )
Each cell is a little body living on its own. It moves, digests, grows, excretes (排泄) and reproduces. But,
living as it does in a community of cells, it is not independent at all. The specialized cells of the body are
dependent on each other for such things as nourishment and the removal of their waste matter. For example,
if the digestive cells of the food canal do not perform their function properly, the muscle cells will not receive
nourishment, or if the excreting cells don't take away poisonous waste, the cells of the body will be poisoned
and die. Some cells of the body move, but not many. It is not necessary for the majority to move.
2. (      )
All the cells of the body need food. They receive their food from a fluid called lymph (淋巴), which
permeates all the tissues and bathes the individual cells. The lymph circulates through the tissues, carrying food
obtained into the food canal, the intestines (腸子).
3. (      )
All cells excrete waste matter. When the food has been used, the waste matter which the cells don't require
is passed into the circulating lymph and thus carried away. It is taken to the cells of the organs which are
specialized for removing waste matter from the body.
4. (      )
All the cells reproduce their own kind and grow. In performing their work cells become tired, worn out and
die. If the tissue of the organ is to maintain its health, new cells are required to replace the old ones. The
healthy cells accomplish this by splitting their bodies, so that one cell becomes two cells and the two cells four
and so on. These cells are young and small, but still carry on the function of the organ.
5. (      )
It is plain, therefore, that each organ of the body must perform its work well if the other organs are to
maintain their health. When they are all functioning well, the body is healthy. The individual is vigorous
(強(qiáng)健的) and free from discomfort of any kind. When any organ fails to do its work, all the organs are liable
to become affected; changes take place in their cells and their functions are disordered. Such changes give
rise to sensations of sickness, pain, loss of strength, bad appetite, fever, and so on. The body is said to be
diseased.

As parents, I do not believe that any of us sets out to raise a child that is disrespectful or bratty (無禮的).
Here are some helpful tips on how to raise a bratty child so that you can have a child that will be a benefit to
society.
It doesn't take long for a toddler (學(xué)步兒童) to toddle right into trouble of some kind. This is the perfect
time for parents to teach the child not to do that action again. 1_____ Helping a child to behave in an acceptable
manner is a necessary part of raising the child well. Discipline is a useful teaching tool to guide a child. I think
it's necessary to explain to children what responsibility means. Responsibilities mean the things you have to do.
As parents, you should say to your children "If you play with your toys, it's your responsibility to put them
away." Besides, coach your children in their responsibilities. 2_____
Children should use their time well. We can't let a child do the same thing again and again. When kids are
bored, they can end up in trouble creating problems for themselves and others. 3_____ Children should be told
not to waste their time and they should make full use of their time to do useful things.
The children who are eager to increase their pocket money should be taught that money does not come
easily. For example, when parents buy school lunch for their children, they should put this spending into
children's pocket money. If children want to get much more money, parents can ask them to cook the lunch
themselves. 4_____ Parents should let their children know how to be in charge of their "expenses" and manage
their expenditure (花費(fèi)).
5_____ It is your responsibility to help and guide your kids. So, the next time you see a bratty kid remember:
they didn't get that way themselves, and they have parents who didn't take time to teach them.
A. Parents should be strict with children.
B. You, the parent, whom kids rely on.
C. This process is called discipline.
D. You should encourage children to be kind.
E. I think it's very important that kids should be coached and not just lectured to.
F. Parents should encourage their children to save their pocket money.
G. Sports, activities and chores are a few things to help give kids something to fill their time.

Scientists say illegal logging is threatening one of Mexico's most famous insects. Satellite pictures show
large wooded areas have been cleared from the central Mexican state of Michoacan. The forests are the winter
home for millions of monarch butterflies. The butterflies go there each year to reproduce. After reproducing,
the adult butterflies die, but their young return to the home of their parents each spring.
The American space agency released the relevant satellite pictures last month. The images show the Monarch
Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. A Mexican law protects trees growing in the area. The images show that about
four hundred and forty-five hectares have been cleared since 2004. Scientists say that, if the clearing continues,
monarch butterflies are unlikely to continue using the Reserve as their winter home.
For thousands of years, the butterflies have been flying to the same forests. Their trip begins along the border
of Canada and the northeastern United States. The insects fly about eighty kilometers a day. They reach central
Mexico after about sixty days. No one is sure why the brightly coloured orange and black butterflies chose these
forests. However, scientists believe the area might offer the right mix of wetness and cool weather to keep the
insects alive through the winter.
Lincoln Brower is a professor of biology at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. He has been studying monarch
butterflies for fifty-two years. He says they have been migrating along the same path for about ten thousand
years. People in Mexico have compared the arrival of the butterflies to dark cloud-like formations (陣式) filling
the air. The monarchs arrive in such large numbers that they sometimes cover whole trees.
Mexico's President ordered special protection for the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve eight years ago.
The Mexican government has struggled to enforce (強(qiáng)制) the order. Although illegal logging has become one
way for poor people to earn money, other Mexicans are fighting to protect the butterflies' home.
1. What would be the BEST title for the text?
A. Illegal Clearing of Forests Threatens Winter Home of Monarch Butterflies
B. The Forests are the Winter Home for Monarch Butterflies

the butterflies travel there to _____.
A. avoid cold
B. look for food
C. sleep
D. produce young
3. Why did monarch butterflies choose the forest as their winter home?
A. It has many trees.
B. It has the appropriate environment for them.
C. It is easy to get to.
D. We don't know.
4. The underlined word "migrating" in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to "_____".
A. going to live in another area or country, especially in order to find food
B. travelling regularly from one part of the world to another
C. changing from one place or position to another
D. starting using an area again as a place to live
5. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Mexico has nothing but forests.
B. Most people in Mexico are poor.

Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and
other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students
who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved
grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame.
After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime,
drug use, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar
youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting the following fields of
development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that
after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make
a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage (時(shí)量) matters-young
people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or
over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make bigger difference for those students who need
help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best
when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities for positive relationships,
skill building, meaningful involvement (參與), expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics
make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe
and fair environments, encourage personalized (個(gè)性化的) involvement, and actively create learning
opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have promising future, how they are designed and run
matters.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not
necessary so, however, Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how.
     1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have
to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping,
dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for
entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is
happening to your time.
      2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which
may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,
or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
      3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers
say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher
says.
     4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points
that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read
that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
     5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a
subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so
don't be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many
others after you have tried these.

More teachers are starting off the school year with letters to parents and students to introduce themselves
and set a tone (基調(diào))for the year. The letters are a good way to start positive communication with parents,
several teachers told Education World.
"I think it's professional (專業(yè)的)," said Dorothy Peselli, an English teacher at Sparta
High School in Sparta, New Jersay, Peselli, who gives out the letters the first day of school,
told Education World."It gives parents an image of you as a professional. If you start
communication off in a positive manner, you will have the parents on your side when you need them."
In her letter to parents, Peselli encourages them to call or e-mail her with specific concerns about their
children."I want to work as a team to make sure that your child becomes an independent lifelong learner,"
Peselli wrote to parents last September. She also telephones the parents of all her students at the beginning of
the year.

Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday.
They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels (血管) dilated in much
the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications (藥物).
"We have a pretty impressive effect," said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology (心臟病學(xué))
at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
"Blood vessel diameter improved," he said. "The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the
vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise." A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.
When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝塊)
that cause heart attacks and strokes. "We are not saying to stop your stations or not to exercise but rather to
add this to an overall program of heart health," said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the
American Heart Association in New Orleans.
Miller's team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music.
They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel
anxious while the researchers did ultrasound (超聲波) tests designed to show blood vessel function.
Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average
when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked-in most cases in this group heavy
metal-blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.
Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more
smoothly. "I asked myself what other things make us feel real good, besides calories from dark chocolate of
course. Music came to mind.... It makes me feel really good," he said.
Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what
pleases each individual.
1. The underlined word dilate (in paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to "_____".
A. widen
B. move
C. change
D. increase
2. According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up?
A. Taking exercise.
B. Listening to unpleasant music.
C. Bursting into laughter.
D. Taking drugs like statins.
3. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokes
B. music is better than chocolate for your health
C. the style of music has different effects on different people
D. a person's overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets
4. What's the best title of the passage?

Pushy parents and teachers who"hothouse" the under-5s risk causing damage to the children's long term
development, a leading education expert said.
Lilian Katz, Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, said that four-year-olds engaged in reading
and writing went on to perform worse academically than those engaged in imaginative learning. They scored
higher in tests at the age of 5, but children whose first year at school was stimulating outstripped them four
years later.
The findings suggest that the government's structured approach to early years' learning could be storing
up problems for children. They also raise serious questions about the plan for all children to be able to read
by the age of 6.
In many countries formal teaching does not start until children are 6 or 7 and have improved their social
and manual skills. Children start learning to read and write at 6 in the United States, France and Germany,
and at 7 in Finland and Sweden.
Professor Katz said that in many schools the courses were"boring children to tears". Much academic
teaching required children to learn by memorizing pieces of information out of context, she said. Teaching
in reception class should instead allow children to develop their intellect by exploring their environments
and asking questions.
"Research suggests the benefits of formal academic instruction for four-and five-year-olds seem to be
promising when they are tested early, but considerably less so in the long term. When these children are
followed over a period of three or more years, those who had early experience in more intellectually engaging
curricula were more likely to do well in school than their peers, who had received early academic instruction."
She advocates teaching children through first-hand experience and play, in mixed-aged classes. This can
include puppet shows, drawing or running a pretend shop in the classroom.
1. According to the passage, those who "hothouse" the under-5s would probably ______.

A. prefer a lot of interaction and stimulation while teaching
B. teach in a lively way to motivate kids' interest
C. push the kids to memorize pieces of information
D. care about the kids' physical development

2. What does the underlined word "outstripped" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. did better than
B. looked down upon
C. caught up with
D. performed worse than
3. The message the author wants to deliver through the passage is that formal teaching ______.
A. can start at different times in different countries.
B. should not be started too early
C. is best carried out in Finland and Sweden
D. should include teaching children social and manual skills
4. Which of the following is NOT the opinion of Lilian Katz?
A. Children should be taught through first-hand experience.
B. Learning in a mixed-age class is good for children.
C. Running a shop can help children get good marks.
D. Puppet shows and drawing are useful and easy in teaching children.

Scientists have devised a way to determine roughly where a person has lived using a strand (縷) of hair,
a technique that could help track the movements of criminal suspects or unidentified murder victims.
The method relies on measuring how chemical variations in drinking water show up in people's hair.
"You're what you eat and drink, and that's recorded in your hair," said Thure Cerling, a geologist at the
University of Utah.
While U.S. diet is relatively identical, water supplies vary. The differences result from weather patterns.
The chemical composition of rainfall changes slightly as rain clouds move.
Most hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water are stable, but traces of both elements are also present as
heavier isotopes (同位素). The heaviest rain falls first. As a result, storms that form over the Pacific deliver
heavier water to California than to Utah.
Similar patterns exist throughout the U.S. By measuring the proportion of heavier hydrogen and oxygen
isotopes along a strand of hair, scientists can construct a geographic timeline. Each inch of hair corresponds
to about two months. Cerling's team collected tap water samples from 600 cities and constructed a map of
the regional difference. They checked the accuracy of the map by testing 200 hair samples collected from
65 barber shops. They were able to accurately place the hair samples in broad region roughly corresponding
to the movement of rain systems.
"It's not good for pinpointing (精確定位)," Cerling said. "It's good for eliminating many possibilities."
Todd Park, a local detective, said the method has helped him learn more about an unidentified woman
whose skeleton was found near Great Salt Lake. The woman was 5 feet tall. Police recovered 26 bones, a
T-shirt and several strands of hair. When Park heard about the research, he gave the hair samples to the
researches. Chemical testing showed that over the two years before her death, she moved about every two
months. She stayed in the Northwest, although the test could not be more specific than somewhere between
eastern Oregon and western Wyoming.
"It's still a substantial area," Park said,"But it narrows its way down for me."
1. What is the scientists' new discovery?
A. One's hair growth has to do with the amount of water and drink.
B. A person's hair may show where they have lived.
C. Hair analysis accurately identifies criminal suspects.
D. The chemical composition of hair varies from person to person.
2. What is said about the rainfall in America's West?
A. There is much more rainfall in California than in Utah.
B. The water it delivers becomes lighter when it moves inland.
C. Its chemical composition is less stable than in other areas.
D. It gathers more light isotopes as it moves eastward.
3. What did Cerling's team produce in their research?
A. A map showing the regional difference of tap water.
B. A collection of hair samples from various barber shops.
C. A method to measure the amount of water in human hair.
D. A chart illustrating the movement of the rain system.
4. What is the practical value of Cerling's research?
A. It helps analyze the quantity of water in different regions.
B. It helps the police determine where a crime is committed.
C. It helps the police narrow down possibilities in detective work.
D. It helps identify the drinking habits of the person under investigation.
