(Part of Yang Lan’s speech in Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games)

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good afternoon!

Before I introduce our cultural programs, I want to tell you one thing first about 2008. You're going to have a great time in Beijing
Many people are fascinated by China’s Sport legends(傳奇)in history. For example, back to Song Dynasty, which was the 11th century, people in our country started to play a game called Cuju, which is regarded as the origin of ancient football. The game was so popular that women were also participating. So now, you probably will understand why our women football team does so well today.

…….

With a concept inspired by the famed Silk Road, our Torch Relay will break new ground, traveling from Olympia through some of the oldest civilizations known to man-----Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Byzantine, Mesopotamian, Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese. Carrying the message "Share the Peace, Share the Olympics," the eternal flame will reach new heights as it crosses the Himalayas over the world's highest summit - Mount Qomolangma, which is known to many of you as Mt. Everest. In China, the torch will pass through Tibet, cross the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, travel the Great Wall and visit Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the 56 ethnic communities who make up our society. On its journey, the flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay.
I am afraid I can not give the whole picture of our cultural programs within such a short period of time. Before I end, let me share with you one story. Seven hundred years ago, amazed by his incredible descriptions of a faraway land of great beauty, people asked Marco Polo whether his stories about China were true. And Marco answered: What I have told you was not even half of what I saw. Actually, what we have shown you here today is only a fraction of Beijing that awaits you.
Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that Beijing will prove to be a land of wonders to all of you to athletes, spectators(觀眾) and the worldwide television audience alike. Come and join us.
Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you all.

56. In Yanglan’s speech, she mentioned a game called Cuju, she implied that _____.

A.     China is the original country of football.

B.      China is a country with a long history in sports.

C.      People in China used to play football well.

D.     Women in China are good at football.

57. Which of the following is NOT the promise that China will keep to the world?

       A. Whoever takes part in the Beijing Olympic Games will have a great time in Beijing.

       B. The flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay.
       C. The Olympic Torch will reach the world's highest summit - Mount Qomolangma.

       D. Marco Polo’s stories will await athletes, spectators and the worldwide

television audience.

58. Marco Polo ‘s answer meant that ______

       A. what he wrote was half better than what he saw.

       B. he was interested in half of what he had seen.

       C. he was not able to describe the beauty of the faraway land.

       D. there were so many true stories that he could only tell part of them.

                           ( B )

My son. The phrase felt awkward and strange the first time I said it, and I had to practice it a thousand times. I started saying the words to myself the day the ultrasound (超生波)told me we were having a baby.

   Finally, my son was born.

The nurse came out of the delivery room, holding a tiny, howling human being wrapped in a white sheet, his small hands and delicate fingers shaking nervously. "Baby Sanchez?" she asked, looking at the room full of expectant fathers.

I stood up, holding my breath. She showed me my baby. "My son," I whispered. The little guy screamed, "waaaaaaah"

But in my heart I heard him cry out, "Daaaaaaad!" I don't care if everyone in the room will swear they didn't hear my baby say that. I called him "My son," and he called me "Dad," and that's that.

People ask me, "What did you feel at that moment?" I can't even begin to answer. I'm a writer yet I grope for the right words. Joyful isn't powerful enough. Bliss isn't sweet enough. Peaceful isn't calm enough. Happy isn't tense enough.

After my son was whisked away to the nursery, I sat down and shut my eyes. But tears escaped them anyway. Then out of the blue, my 80-year-old father entered, and we embraced. "Dad," I whispered.

"My son," my heart heard him saying.

Suddenly the past 33 years folded into the present and I was now the baby bundled in white, with my father standing over me.

"My son," I imagined him saying.

"Daaaaaaad!" I cried my little lungs out.

At that point, I knew I was going to be a great father. The old man in front of me seemed to agree. He smiled and we walked out of the room in search of the tiny human being that would change our lives for ever.

 59. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. His son called him "Dad" when the writer called him "My son"

B. All the people didn't hear the baby say except the writer.

C. Sanchez is the writer's family name.

D. The baby was whisked away because the nurse found there was a mistake.

60.   Which is the best title for this passage?

A. When My Son Was Born.              B. Father and Son

C. Two Words from the Heart             D. My Son

61.   Why was the writer sure he was going to be a great father?

A. Because his son is so gifted.

B. Because he had much experience in bringing up children.

C. Because his father promised to help him.

D. Because his father had already set him a good example.

In bringing up children.every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition(學

會)of each new skill----the first spoken words, the first independent steps,or the beginning of reading and writing. It’s common that parents hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate.but this can set up dangerous“feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage.A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, and a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though,if a child is left alone too much,or without any learning opportunities,he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters;others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality(準時)for meals. In general ,the controls imposed(強加的)represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness.

As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that“example is better than precept. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(說教),their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.”

A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

A.encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read

B.not expect too much of them

C.achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own

D.create as many learning opportunities as possible

68.The second paragraph mainly tells us that_________.

A.parents should be strict with their children

B.parental controls satisfy only the needs of the parents and the values of the community

C.parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the

children alone

D.parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation

書面表達

 Dear friends,

Here are my points .We students of today have to pay much attention to our lessons and know little of society though it’s not our fault .A holiday is the best time to make up for that. Taking a part―time job is a good form of social practice. What is learned in books can’t have the same deep effect on us as what is learned through experience. In social practice, we can surely make progress in both knowledge and ability. Besides, taking a part-time job, we may get paid more or less to help our family. Thus ,I will say a senior school student should take a part-time job in holidays, if possible ,of course.
